He went on to make 117 appearances as a centre, making him one of the club’s most capped centres. He was Saintsman #1428 and is remembered by many for scoring the winning try against Moseley in 1976, securing a famous 6–4 victory and the Daily Mail Pennant.
But to us at Casuals, Dave was simply Pikey: a class act, his own man, and a Casual through and through. He captained the club in the 86/87 season, but was equally happy terrorising unsuspecting second team opponents through several seasons as a Casuals player.
Despite his achievements in the game, he wore them lightly and would rarely speak of them unless asked. He brought a positive, enthusiastic attitude to life and to rugby, and he left a lasting impression on those who played with him, against him, or simply had the privilege of knowing him.
During his illness, Dave faced everything with remarkable courage and without self-pity. He made the most of the time he had, showing a fortitude that humbled and strengthened those around him. In difficult times, a person’s true character is revealed, and Dave’s shone brightly.
On behalf of everyone at Northampton Casuals RFC, we send our deepest condolences to Dave’s family, friends, former teammates, and all who knew him.
