Casuals Colts were on the road this weekend, travelling to Towcester on a cold and windy afternoon. With two props unavailable at short notice Towcester agreed to play the match with uncontested scrums.
The match was very tightly contested for the first 15 minutes with both teams having a lot of possession making it a very watchable match for the spectators.
After the first 15 minutes Casuals stepped up the gears and started to make inroads into the Towcester defence. Olly Walker, playing at fly half, passed to Rhys King who ran past three Towcester players to go over for the first try of the afternoon. With the windy conditions not ideal for kicking the conversion was missed. 0 – 5.
The match restarted with both teams competing well for the ball and possession changing sides frequently. Hamish Mitchell, Colts Captain, received the ball from Fin Shelton, scrum half, on the halfway line and made a break by stepping one of Towcester’s forwards then breaking another tackle and reaching the 22 with two Towcester players trying to stop him. Hamish managed to fend them off and ran in under the posts to score Casuals second try. Olly Walker then converted the try taking the score to 0 – 12.
Casuals received the ball and kicked it over the top of Towcester’s defensive line with Rhys King following the ball. This pressure caused a forced error from a Towcester player who dropped the ball, with Rhys picking up the loose ball and running the length of half the pitch to score in the corner. Casuals were unable to covert the try for the extra points so the score going into half time was 0 – 17.
At the start of the second half Casuals came out a little slower allowing Towcester to get back into the game and after 15 minutes score in the far corner and converting their try to take the score to 7 – 17.
Casuals then dug in and put in the hard graft needed in defence to protect their lead and they kept Towcester out of the scoring zone for the rest of the match. Final score 7 – 17 to Casuals.
A good team performance. Impressive displays by Benny Surtees-Wheat and Lucca Haskins made the decision for Man of the Match a difficult one for the coaches, however, it was awarded to Lucca Haskins.
This weekend the Colts are at home to Brackley.
